Our Strategy

As we celebrate 45 years of dedicated service, we also embark on a five-year strategic journey to address the challenges that lie ahead. This strategy not only honours our past but reflects on what we have learnt in that time and considers how we can most effectively safeguard hospice care for future generations in Somerset.

Time to Care – Now & Always

Our new strategy will help us to ensure that St Margaret’s is responding to and delivering the very best care for the evolving needs of our community, as well as innovating how we can resource and fund hospice care for the next 45 years and beyond.

While hospice care today is widely recognised for its end-of-life care, there is less understanding of the role hospices play in helping people with deteriorating life-limiting illnesses live well for as long as possible. Our anniversary year gives us a unique opportunity to raise our voice and increase our profile, which in turn will help redefine what hospice care means today and into the future for Somerset and St Margaret’s.

Our new Vision and Mission

Part of developing the strategy allowed us to engage with stakeholders and look at our core vision and mission, which have been updated.

Our vision is of a future where we have sustainable, high-quality, end-of‑life care that is accessible, tailored and available earlier, so more people in Somerset can live well and die well.

Our mission at St Margaret’s will be to deliver holistic and compassionate hospice care, so that we can help empower more people who have progressive life‑limiting illnesses to live fully and die with dignity.

one male and one female dr in the In-Patient UnitHospice care at St Margaret’s is about taking the time to care – getting to know our patients, listening and tailoring a personalised approach. This means combining excellent medical and nursing care with holistic support that recognises the practical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of everyone. Our values of compassion, collaboration and ambition reflect this and underpin all that we do, weaving through every aspect of our care and service provision – and are the foundations for our new strategy.

Strategic Principles

Raising our Voice

We will amplify our presence within the community by promoting greater awareness of our mission, services, and impact. Through advocacy and communication, we aim to foster stronger engagement and partnerships.

Enhancing our Care

We will innovate and adapt our care delivery model to ensure we continue to meet the evolving needs of individuals and families. By focusing on quality and accessibility, we will enhance their experiences and outcomes.

Stewarding our Resources

We will ensure the sustainable and efficient use of our resources, fostering resilience and growth. Through strategic planning and collaboration, we will safeguard our ability to deliver exceptional care for the future.

Funding Our Care

A key part of our new five-year strategy is thinking about how we fund and resource high quality care both now and long into the future. A new five-year financial plan has also been developed and looks at how the hospice can grow its income in a sustainable way, while stewarding our resources, and ensuring we have sufficient reserves.

We know that the performance of our existing charitable income streams – retail, legacies, fundraising, grants and lottery – will remain critical if we are to meet our goals and enhance and increase our care.

St Margaret’s Hospice will receive a grant of £204,046 from the Government, as part of its commitment to support hospices throughout England. In total £100m will be shared between 170 hospices, with £25m allocated in the current financial year, and a further £75m distributed in 2025/26. Rising costs are putting all hospices under pressure, at a time when demand for our services and care is growing. Therefore, this grant is a very welcome boost in St Margaret’s 45th Birthday year!

Fundraise for Us

As we gratefully receive the gift of £204k, we are conscious that it costs us £15m each year to run the hospice. Your support is still vital in helping us to continue to run our services for the people of Somerset.
