Keira's Story

Keira started volunteering in the St Margaret’s shop in Chard in October 2022 when she was 12 years old. She loves working on the till and hopes to have a career in care or in retail in the future thanks to the support the hospice has given to her.

“I started volunteering for St Margaret’s in October 2022 and it’s been a wonderful experience for me. I just love volunteering helping other people out, it’s one of my favourite ways to spend my time. The hospice cared for someone close to me quite recently and it feels great to be able to give something back to say thank you to them for supporting them.

“I love volunteering at the Chard shop, the team of staff and volunteers there is absolutely amazing. They made me feel so welcome when I first started and are always there to help me if I need any support. Tracey, the shop manager, has been a massive help, she’s been such a support throughout my time volunteering at the hospice and the whole experience has helped me to grow in confidence.

“When I volunteer I most enjoy working on the till and meeting customers. Everyone has a different story to tell, and I love getting to know our regular customers as well as welcoming in new customers to the shop.

“My friends always ask me to come out on the weekends, but they actually think its great that I volunteer for the hospice. I think what the hospice does is absolutely amazing, I’ve seen how the money we raise helps people and it’s great to know I am making a difference when I volunteer my time every week.

“I’ve learnt some great skills here which I know I will take into the future with me. I hope to work in care or in retail in the future and that’s all because of coming to the shop, I’ve just absolutely loved it.

“My family are really proud of what I am doing, they think its fantastic that I want to support the hospice. The hospice does such great things for people, and I’d encourage other young people like me to come along and support them, it really does make a big difference.”
