St Margaret’s Hospice is a local charity, and every year we rely on the support of our local community to raise vital funds, that enable us to provide care to more than 5,000 people on their end-of-life journey in Somerset. We estimate that one in three local people will be touched by St Margaret’s in their lifetime – and that’s why your hospice needs you!

You can help us raise thousands of pounds this year with the priceless gift of a few hours of your time. We are looking for people with great interpersonal skills, lots of enthusiasm, who are reliable and responsible, and ready to help out with a variety fundraising activities and events all over Somerset.

So, whether you’re looking to meet new people, gain work experience for your CV, develop new skills, or simply feel good about doing something that impacts the lives of people in your neighbourhood: volunteering with the fundraising team at St Margaret’s could be what you are looking for.

Get stuck in!

We fundraise in lots of different ways, so you could help by:

  • Serving teas and coffees at a fundraising event
  • Stewarding or marshalling at events
  • Sourcing prizes for raffles and auctions
  • Setting up or packing down before and after an event
  • Selling merchandise or raffle tickets at events
  • Promoting fundraising events in your local area by delivering posters, leaflets and newsletters to local shops, community noticeboards, libraries, village halls or GP surgeries
  • Providing admin support, from stuffing envelopes to making follow up phone calls

Please note: this is a voluntary role, but travel and out of pocket expenses will be paid. You’ll also receive a full induction with St Margaret’s, and regular updates from the team to keep you inspired. Training will be provided for all volunteers to help them deliver their role.

 About you

If you have a passion for supporting the income growth and brand awareness of your local hospice and love a varied role, we’d love you to join us! We are looking for General Fundraising Volunteers to join our Fundraising team to enable St Margaret’s to increase sustainable income by helping at our fundraising activities and events across Somerset.

Time commitment

  • This role is very varied and required on an ad hoc basis. You will receive regular updates via email from the Fundraising Team, where you can pick and choose where you’d like to help out – the choice is yours!
  • You are required to attend induction and update training.

Brief description of main tasks and activities

  • Serving refreshments at events including tea, coffee, and cakes
  • Assisting and sourcing prizes and gifts for raffles, auctions etc.
  • Helping with the sale of raffle tickets, merchandise etc. at events
  • Assisting with stewarding or marshalling at events
  • Helping with the set up and pack down of an event
  • Promoting the hospice’s upcoming events and information in your local area by displaying posters, leaflets and newsletters in local shops, community noticeboards, libraries, village halls, GP surgeries etc. Please always ask for permission before displaying any of the above materials
  • Carrying out specific admin duties such as filing, envelope stuffing, carrying out research, follow up phone calls etc.
  • Ensure that you follow St Margaret’s Hospice Care’s policies and procedures at all times, especially when handling cash and dealing with sensitive data
  • To act as an ambassador for St Margaret’s Hospice Care.

You do not need any specific experience or qualifications to carry out the role of a General Fundraising Volunteer, but the role may be suitable for you if you:

  • Enjoy meeting and talking to new people
  • Are happy to travel across Somerset
  • Are confident and happy to handle cash
  • Enjoy variety
  • Are confident using technology such as computers and phones
  • Feel confident in cold calling – please note training can be provided
  • Are keen to support, raise funds and the profile of St Margaret’s Hospice Care, supporting people who are living with a life-limiting illness
  • Are able to adhere to St Margaret’s Hospice Care’ policies and procedures at all times whilst volunteering
  • Are willing to represent the hospice and wear branded uniform, whilst volunteering.
