We have been an integral part of the Somerset community for over four decades, offering compassionate and specialised palliative care, free of charge, to patients and their families when it matters most.
Our services are available to a population of approximately 520,000 people, and we believe that everyone within our community deserves tailored and dignified care so they can focus on living well, until the end.
Our new Vision and Mission
Our vision is of a future where we have sustainable, high-quality, end-of‑life care that is accessible, tailored and available earlier, so more people in Somerset can live well and die well.
Our mission at St Margaret’s will be to deliver holistic and compassionate hospice care, so that we can help empower more people who have progressive life‑limiting illnesses to live fully and die with dignity.
Our Values
Hospice care at St Margaret’s is about taking the time to care – getting to know our patients, listening and tailoring a personalised approach. This means combining excellent medical and nursing care with holistic support that recognises the practical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of everyone. Our values of compassion, collaboration and ambition reflect this and underpin all that we do, weaving through every aspect of our care and service provision.
Our services are free to anyone, regardless of their background, faith, culture, personal identity, or location within the county. We firmly believe that compassionate care should be accessible to all, and we strive to ensure that our support reaches every individual and family who can benefit from it. We recognise that this means looking after those closest to them – the husbands, wives, life partners, children, and carers of our patients, both before, during and after death.
Our Services
We offer expertise and compassionate care to patients nearing the end of life, ensuring comfort and dignity.
Our Central Referral Centre and out-of-hours Advice Line provide immediate support and specialist palliative care guidance to patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
Our holistic approach includes a range of therapies, such as complementary therapy, physiotherapy, and lymphoedema clinics, aimed at improving quality of life.
Our community nursing teams and hospice hubs deliver personalised care through home visits, enabling patients to remain in familiar surroundings with loved ones.
Our Sunflower Centre Day Hospices in Taunton and Yeovil provide services and support groups, including social activities and therapies, for those able to travel and benefit from community connections.
We provide specialist palliative care – including symptom management – on our specialist In-Patient Unit, ensuring patients receive the care they need, with many able to return home once stable.
Supporting loved ones is a priority, offering guidance and resources before, during, and after a patient’s death. We offer Bereavement Support services for people of all ages, helping families and carers cope with the loss of a loved one.
Our Spiritual Care team at St Margaret’s cares for everyone as a spiritual person, helping them find peace during their end-of-life journey. We care for the human spirit in every person as well as offering full support to those who express their spirituality through a faith or specific spiritual pathway.
