Why we need you
As a charity, we rely on the support of dedicated volunteers in our shops to help raise vital funds for patient care and family support. By donating your time, you’ll help keep our shops and warehouse running smoothly, help us verify the integrity of donated stock, and ensure we continue to make a difference in the community. Your contribution supports our mission to provide compassionate care and support to those facing a life-limiting illness.
What you will be doing
As a PAT Testing Volunteer, you’ll be part of a friendly and supportive team in a participating shop or at our Walford Cross warehouse, helping with tasks such as:
- Carrying out every-day functional PAT tests to ensure that the donated appliances are fit for purpose and safe to be sold in our retail shops.
The skills you will need
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and experiences. For this role, we’re looking for people who:
- Are friendly, approachable, and enjoy working with others
- Have good communication and listening skills
- Are reliable and able to follow instructions
- Show a good level of common sense and a practical capability
- Be physically fit with good stamina – lifting, carrying and standing will be required
- Ideally have an electrical background although not essential.

What we need from you
To volunteer with us, we ask that you:
- Be willing to be trained and take a PAT testing qualification (via an external course paid for and organised by St Margarets). This course will include a short examination
- Commit to a regular shift (we’re flexible and will work around your availability)
- Comply with all St Margarets Risk Assessments, policies and procedures
- Register as a volunteer with us using our Volunteer Management System
- Provide us with two reference
- Attend a taster session which will be agreed with the shop manager
- To successfully complete a volunteer induction programme
- Complete any required training (e.g. health & safety, till use)
- Follow our policies on confidentiality, health and safety, and safeguarding.
