When you donate money or items to us and sign up to Gift Aid, you can help us raise even more money to support local people and families who need hospice care.
For example, a bag of donated clothes could raise up to £25 in our charity shops. With Gift Aid, that could increase to £31 – without costing you a penny more.
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows charities like St Margaret’s to claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate in money or items, provided you’re an eligible UK taxpayer.
It’s a simple way to make your donation go even further and help us provide compassionate hospice care across Somerset.
How does Gift Aid work?
It’s easy to add Gift Aid to your shop donations. Just follow these three steps:
Step 1: Donate your items
Bag up any pre-loved clothes, accessories, or other items, and take them to your local charity shop. We can also provide free furniture collections.
Step 2: Sign up for Gift Aid
Let our shop team know you’d like to Gift Aid your donations. They’ll ask you to complete a short form confirming you’re an eligible UK taxpayer.
You only need to sign up once, and we’ll keep your details on record for future donations.
Step 3: We’ll do the rest!
When your donated items sell, we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 raised, subject to the Gift Aid rules. The money comes from tax you’ve already paid, so it won’t cost you a penny more.
That means if your items sell for £10, St Margaret’s could receive £12.50 in total, helping your donation make an even bigger difference.
Am I eligible for Gift Aid?
You can sign up for Gift Aid if:
- You’re a UK taypayer who pays Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax
- You pay enough UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations to charities in that tax year.
- You complete a Gift Aid declaration.
Important: if you pay less tax than the total Gift Aid claimed on your donations, you’re responsible for paying the difference to HMRC. If your tax circumstances change, it’s essential to let the charity know.
How do I sign up to Gift Aid?
Simply complete our Gift Aid form to confirm that you are a UK taxpayer and eligible to apply Gift Aid to your donations. You can send a copy to us or complete one in a St Margaret’s charity shop.
What if I stop paying tax?
If you stop paying tax, please contact us. We’ll update your details to make sure Gift Aid isn’t claimed on your donations.
