Our shops could not run without our wonderful volunteers. From sorting and steaming clothes, to rotating our stock, to serving customers on the till, they are so vital to our success. Please note this is a voluntary role.
If you are looking for a fun and varied volunteer opportunity, working in one of our shops would be perfect for you. You will get the chance to be part of a great team that are in the hearts of the community, it is not only just about selling items, but also being a hub for people to come together.
Everyone will have something to offer in our shops be it an interest in fashion, bric-a-brac or furniture, a flair for display, a love for mixing with people, previous experience in retail, a knowledge of antiques and collectables, IT skills, eBay knowledge, or just sheer enthusiasm.
What you will be doing
We can offer specific volunteering roles depending on your preference. We’ll work with you to find the right fit. Potential tasks include:
- Greeting customers, receiving donations, and promoting Gift Aid when items are donated
- Preparing donated stock for sale, including sorting, steaming, hanging, and pricing
- Assisting staff with replenishing shop floor displays to maximise sales
- Operating the till in line with the organisation’s cash-handling procedures (full training provided)
- Delivering excellent customer service to all visitors
- Promoting and selling St Margaret’s Lottery tickets
- Handling cash and card transactions securely
- Helping to maintain a clean, tidy, and safe shop environment
- Supporting with other general retail tasks as needed.
Skills, experience and personal qualities most suited to the role
- Are friendly, approachable, and enjoy working with others
- Have good communication and listening skills
- Are reliable and able to follow instructions
- Are comfortable working in a busy retail environment
- Are willing to learn and take on a variety of tasks
- Have basic numeracy skills (for till work – training will be provided)
- Are physically fit and able to lift items of varying weights.

- Commit to a regular shift (we’re flexible and will work around your availability)
- Register as a volunteer with us using our Volunteer Management System
- Provide us with one reference
- Attend a taster session
- Complete a volunteer induction programme
- Complete any required training
