Why share a story?

Real stories help us show the human side of hospice care. They can:

  • Raise awareness about what we do
  • Help others understand what hospice care really means
  • Encourage people to get involved—by donating, volunteering, sponsoring, or supporting events
  • Celebrate the compassion and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters

Your experience, whatever it looks like, is important—and it could help inspire and comfort others.

It’s a very therapeutic experience.”
Mike

What’s involved?

We know that every story is personal, so we’ll always take things at your pace and in a way that works for you.

Here’s what the process usually looks like:

  1. Initial Chat – We will get in touch to talk and get to know a little about your experience.
  2. Meeting up – We can meet wherever suits you best: at home, at work, or at one of our hospice hubs in Yeovil or Taunton.
  3. You’re in control – You can share your story on video, or just in writing.
    • If you’re happy to be filmed, our videographer will come along and handle the setup.
    • If you’d prefer a written story only, we’ll record audio just for transcription (and delete it afterwards).
  4. Conversation – We’ll simply have a chat, asking some questions to help guide your story.
  5. Consent – You’ll be asked to sign a media consent form [link] and approve everything before it’s shared. We may also ask to take photos, or for you to send us some.
  6. Bringing it together – We’ll create a written story, and a video if agreed. Nothing is published until you’ve confirmed you’re happy with your story.
  7. Sharing your story – Once you’re happy, we’ll share your story through our website, social media, and other agreed materials.
We all think you did it beautifully. Thank you so much for the opportunity to share Mum’s story.”

Rob and Alison in a meadw

Alison & Rob’s Story

“No one should have to go through this, but many people do,” says Alison. “I want to raise funds so more people can experience the care we did: so that more people can have a cuddle bed, like us.”

Hayley’s Story

This May, the Yeovil hospice was filled with anticipation. Hayley Mills, one of our wonderful volunteers, was preparing to say goodbye to something very special: her beloved dreadlocks.

Simon’s Story

“St Margaret’s offers so much more than end-of-life care. The level of care and excellence in every aspect is unmatched, and people locally don’t realise how fortunate they are to have it.”

Paul’s Story

“There’s no judgment… Everybody’s easy-going, and we have a bit of a giggle. One of the reasons I enjoy coming is because I get to socialise and just generally meet nice people.”

Louise’s Story

“I wasn’t sure what to expect when visiting the Sunflower Day Centre, but everyone was so lovely; the other patients made you feel like you were part of their family. Now, every time I go there, I try to stay as long as possible.”

Lucy & Martin’s Story

“From the cleaners who always stopped to ask how we were and made Mum giggle, to the chefs who gave us countless puddings, to the unbelievably talented nurses, doctors, and HCAs who formed special connections with Mum—we can’t thank you enough. Thank you from all of our hearts for providing Mum with the most peaceful end-of-life care.”
