On New Year’s Day a spirited group of 200 supporters braved the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean, raising over £5.5k and marking the third consecutive year of the St Margaret’s New Year’s Day Charity Dip at Minehead beach – an event rapidly evolving into a sought-after annual tradition.

Clad in a myriad of imaginative fancy dress costumes including a Star Wars Storm Trooper, John Travolta’s flares and a banana, participants gathered at 10am to wade into the Atlantic taking on the waves, where the salty air sprayed up as people joyfully leaped and splashed into the icy ocean.

With an air temperature hovering at only 7 degrees, many participants were grateful for the warmth provided by their St Margaret’s bobble hats. Beyond just keeping everyone a bit warmer, these hats served as a poignant reminder of the cause they were supporting. All funds raised during the event contribute to St Margaret’s Hospice Care, with families and friends participating in groups of five raising a minimum of £50. This sum can cover the cost of an hour of specialist nursing care for someone in need on the In-Patient Unit.

Once you’re in, it’s absolutely amazing, the thrill! And when you come out, you’re like YES!”

Post-swim, Nelly’s Nosh generously provided a free cup of something hot to warm up the courageous dippers. Their offerings also included a variety of hot breakfast items, which were eagerly enjoyed by the participants.

The success of the event was further bolstered by the sponsorship from Wilkie May & Tuckwood, and the lively tunes and music provided by West Somerset Radio, who joined us on the day, ensuring everyone’s spirits remained high.

St Margaret’s is thankful for the dedication of every participant and their large group of spectators – whilst the weather was kind to us the waves were big, and watching every participant take the plunge, and enjoy the challenge was really inspiring.” Merle continued, “We’re delighted to have raised so much money for the hospice and anticipate that figure rising over the coming days and weeks as sponsorship continues to come in.”
