“I promised I’d never forget her”: Somerset widower backs £50,000 remembrance appeal

John is sharing his and Tina's story to encourage people across the county to remember someone they love - and help St Margaret's raise £50,000 for local hospice care.

Before Tina died, she asked her husband John one thing: “When I’m dead, don’t forget me.”

It was a promise John has kept in countless ways, from singing songs in her memory to dedicating a leaf on the Memory Tree at St Margaret’s Hospice in Yeovil.

Now, he’s supporting the hospice’s annual Light up a Life appeal, which invites everyone across Somerset to make a dedication in memory of someone special, while helping more patients and families receive the care they need.

John and Tina met as students and spent nearly 40 years together. When Tina was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer, St Margaret’s supported the couple through an incredibly difficult time.

At the hospice’s Sunflower Centre, Tina found friendship, laughter and activities she enjoyed. Later, the Community Nursing team helped manage her symptoms so she could remain at home, surrounded by her family.

“When I came to pick her up, all I could hear was laughter,” John remembers. “It just wasn’t what I expected at all.”

Tina died peacefully at home, something John remains grateful for.

The care she received is just one example of the difference donations to St Margaret’s can make. £75 could pay for a nursing visit to a patient in their own home. The £50,000 Light up a Life target could fund the equivalent of more than 650 home nursing visits, helping families receive care and reassurance in familiar surroundings.

Every donation, whatever its size, can make a difference

£25

could pay for an hour of compassionate nursing care, giving a patient comfort and reassurance, and their family peace of mind knowing their loved one is in caring hands.

£30

could give a family a night in our Sunflower Suite, allowing them to stay close to their loved one on the ward and make the most of precious moments together.

£50

could help a patient and their family through difficult times, paying for practical support from our social workers to ease financial, housing or everyday worries, so they can focus on what matters most – each other.

Light up a Life is about remembering the people who have shaped our lives and finding ways to keep their memories close.

You don't need to have a connection to St Margaret's to take part. Whether you're remembering someone who died recently or many years ago, everyone is welcome.

By making a dedication and a donation, people can remember someone special while helping us provide care and support for more families like John and Tina."

As part of this year’s Remember Together theme, St Margaret’s is also inviting people to join two remembrance gatherings: at St John’s Church in Yeovil on Sunday 29 November, and Rumwell Farm Shop & Café near Taunton on Thursday 3 December.

A specially created online remembrance service will be available from 4pm on Sunday 13 December, allowing people to take part from wherever they feel most comfortable.

Supporters can make a dedication and donation online, at participating St Margaret’s Hospice shops or by contacting the hospice directly. Dedications can be included in the hospice’s Books of Remembrance and online service, giving families another way to remember together.

For John, Light up a Life is one more way to honour the promise he made to Tina.

"In order to fulfil my promise to her, I look for as many ways as possible to remember her." – John
