Support is offered in a range of ways for patients and their families, before and after bereavement.
The Family Support Team have a background working with children and have experience in supporting families when a special person in their life has a life-limiting illness or has died.
The team link with schools and others involved in supporting young people, and provide opportunities for children and families to come together.
Samsara is our bereavement service particularly aimed at helping children before, during, and after bereavement.
Families are given a pair of soft toys - the big one representing the parent and the smaller one representing the child. Our therapists encourage children to think about the toys, where they might take them and what they would like to do with them.
For many families, the biggest step is overcoming the fear of having THAT conversation. Children instinctively play with the toys, using them to talk to each other, like puppets - helping to open up those conversations.
Every soft toy, family counselling session or training in a school is paid for by the generosity of people in the local Somerset community.
