Why volunteer for us?

Here are just some of the reasons our volunteers dedicate their time to us:

“I just wanted to make a difference to my community”

“It’s a change of scenery”

“I’ve met such wonderful people”

“It gets me out of the house”

“While I’m looking for work it’s really helped gain some confidence and self-esteem”

“It makes me happy”

Most of our roles can be committed to in the following frequencies: Weekly, fortnightly or monthly or on a relief basis– all of our volunteers will know their specific role, shift time and the frequency of their commitment.

We have many volunteers who would prefer not to commit to a regular “shift”, instead these volunteers are available to stand in for regular volunteers who are on holiday or who are unwell. Relief volunteers give specific times when they might be available. This role may also be used for new volunteers waiting for a regular shift or for those who like some flexibility in their volunteering.

More than 1,200 wonderful volunteers dedicate their time to support our medical teams, support services, in fundraising and in our shops. We could not provide our services without them.

All our volunteer roles can be found here and any vacancies are listed under each department along with the relevant contact for each respective role. For any general enquiries relating to volunteering please email info@st-margarets-hospice.org.uk.

All of our volunteers are fully trained in their respective positions. Volunteers will be under a probation period in the first instance while they undertake their training and induction.

Any equipment needed while carrying out your role will be provided.

Although none of our volunteer roles require patient care (with the exception of Complementary Therapy Volunteers) most of our roles involve patient contact. All our volunteers at our In-patient Units are DBS checked, along with a number of other roles, this is dependant on the type of role and responsibities involved.

St Margaret’s Hospice is committed to the fair treatment of its volunteers or potential volunteers, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, responsibilities for dependants, age, physical/mental disability or offending background.

Checks are undertaken to ensure that drivers are legally insured to carry passengers. A form is sent to their insurance company to advise them of the role as a volunteer driver. We also need copies of up-to-date documents including insurance, MOT and driving licence.
