St Margaret's joins hospices across the country to celebrate Hospice Care Week

Last updated: October 4, 2021

St Margaret’s Hospice Care is joining hospices across the country to celebrate Hospice Care Week – and they want you to get involved too!

Hospice Care Week runs from October 4 to October 8 and is a chance for hospices and the community to celebrate hospice care nationwide. The week, which is run by Hospice UK, is about flying the flag for the wonderful care hospices provide to patients and their families and encouraging communities to support their local hospices. For more information about Hospice Care Week visit https://www.hospiceuk.org/support-us/campaigns/hospice-care-week.

Last year St Margaret’s Hospice supported more than 5,000 people across Somerset and on average their teams care and support 458 patients a week.  In 2020/21 the hospice received 3,675 referrals from across Somerset and their community team supported 2,115 patients.

St Margaret’s cares for people with any life-limiting illness, not just cancer in the community and at the hospice and also support their families and carers. To find out more about how St Margaret’s helps patients and their families visit https://www.st-margarets-hospice.org.uk/your-stories

St Margaret's Hospice is supporting Hospice Care Week

The hospice needs around £14m a year to be able to continue running all its services and support operations. Of this, nearly £8m is spent directly on providing care and support to patients and their families across Somerset. St Margaret’s relies on donations from the public to be able to continue to provide its services to the Somerset community and those donations can pay for the following:

  • £15 could pay for a full day of delicious and nutritionally balanced meals for one of our patients at our hospice in-patient unit
  • £30 could pay for a physiotherapy session helping out patients control their breathing
  • £50 could pay for an hour of nursing care for someone on our In-patient Unit
  • £100 could pay for a Specialist Community Nurse visit for one of our local patients being cared for at home

There are a number of ways for you to get involved in Hospice Care Week including registering for one of St Margaret’s events, visiting one of our charity shops, making a donation or signing up to do some volunteering.
