St. Margaret’s is a charity – we are not part of the NHS

100% of the care and support that St. Margaret's Hospice provides is free of charge to our patients and their families. As a registered charity, we therefore rely heavily on the generosity of our incredible supporters and the local community.

John's story below, is just one example of the many amazing ways in which our supporters help us raise the £9.5million that we require to deliver our vital service across Somerset.

John's Story......Jenny’s Angels fundraising high

This tremendous fundraising activity saw 13 dare devils set off for the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside. The group however were going to be seeing the view from a slightly different angle than most… from the top of a plane!

John Winter and friends took part in the wing walk in memory of John's wife, Jenny, who had planned to do a wing walk herself in aid of St. Margaret's Hospice but sadly passed away before she had a chance.

After being diagnosed with cancer, Jenny Winter became an avid fundraiser, taking part in numerous activities to raise money for charity. In 2015 she was cared for in St. Margaret’s In-patient Unit in Taunton. While in the hospice, Jenny began to plan various fundraising activities in aid of St. Margaret’s to give thanks to the excellent standard of care she was receiving. On top of Jenny’s list was a wing walk.

John Winter, who lives in the West Somerset area, said “I tried to walk every step of Jenny's difficult path with her and can honestly say that I don't know how we would have managed without the support of St. Margaret's Hospice. Since Jenny's death last September St. Margaret's has continued to support me with bereavement counselling so that I don't feel I am left to cope on my own.”

John and his group of Angels have managed to raise over £14,000 by asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them. All 13 completed the challenge including Helen Lacey, Managing Director of Red Berry Recruitment, and her colleague Denise Desbois. Helen said “It was an amazing experience and I would do it again. It was made even more special because we’ve raised so much money to go to such a wonderful local charity.”

John had a target to raise £11,600 which will pay for a day of care at St. Margaret’s Taunton and Yeovil In-patient Units. The current total stands at an amazing £14,708 with donations and sponsorship still coming in.

Terena Young, Community Fundraiser said “I am so proud of Jenny’s Angels, not only for raising such an incredible amount of money but for stepping up to such a big personal challenge. The money they have raised will go directly to supporting over 3,800 people facing a life limiting illness across Somerset every year. I can’t thank them enough.”
