Bridgwater man and furry side-kick are raising funds for local hospice

Former teacher and soldier David, 76, has almost completed running a Muddy Marathon in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice Care. Lottie, David’s lovely Collie x Spaniel has joined him on his journey, as they stride through nearby farmland in all weather.

Running marathons isn’t anything new to David, having previously taken part in London Marathons and Commando Challenges etc., but at 76 years old he wanted to embark on a challenge this year.

David said “Thanks to family, friends and anyone who recognises the essential help which hospices offer to patients and families when needed. Let’s especially recognise that in these unprecedented times, St Margaret’s still steps up to the plate and its staff and volunteers are still here for us. In comparison, 26 muddy miles isn’t much but whatever donation you feel able to make is crucial to St Margaret’s work, so thank you all so much for your generosity.”

David’s wife Gilly has been posting live updates of his and Lottie’s progress on their Just Giving page here, where you can also show your support and donate.

Kara Frampton, Area Manager Community Partnerships said "It has been an absolute pleasure talking with David about his plans to raise money for the hospice, which he came up with completely of his own accord. We are always so humbled when people contact us to say they’d like to fundraise for us – especially during a global pandemic. People’s kindness really keep fundraisers like me inspired and I am so grateful for their support - so thank you David, Lottie and Gilly!"

Because of the help from our wonderful community raising money in aid of us, we are able to continue our care and support for dying people and their families throughout Somerset, so they can make the most of the precious time they have left together.

If you feel motivated by David and Lottie’s challenge and want to carry out your own fundraising, please get in touch with us via fundraising@st-margarets-hospice.org.uk or 01823 345911 – we’d love to hear from you!
