Michael's Story

Michael Copham is a Ward Receptionist at St Margaret’s In-patient Unit in Taunton. He also presents a session at the Friends, Family and Carers Support Groups which run twice a year. He volunteers once a week (more when needed), doing so since 2014 when his wife passed away at the hospice.

Michael says “When my wife was cared for at St Margaret’s I was so impressed with the care and the facilities, I made a commitment that I would come back and be a volunteer. I had to wait a year, which is standard for anyone who has lost a family member to a terminal illness, and now I am back on the ward helping out.”

“One of my main roles is taking calls that come through to the nurse’s station. Obviously, the less time the nurses are doing this, the more time they can dedicate to the clinical care of the patients. I also meet and greet patients, relatives and visitors and help put them at ease as they come to the ward, particularly if it’s their first time here.

"It’s a lovely feeling to be here: everyone is happy, everyone gets on so well and there are no sad faces. It would be great to see younger people helping out. I know people are busy today with work and family life but it really is a great feeling to be supporting the staff here.”

We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to Michael.
