What is our Community Support Service?

It is a home visiting service provided by St Margaret’s Hospice. Trained hospice volunteers operate right across Somerset, offering support to patients and their carers, family and friends.

Who is it for?

This service is available to all St Margaret’s Hospice patients affected by any life-limiting illness and their carers, family and friends - from the early stages of a palliative diagnosis onwards, and wherever they live in Somerset.

How does it work?

Once you decide you would like to have a Community Support Volunteer, we will discuss your needs and what you would like to be able to do. You will be matched with the most suitable volunteer, who will then be introduced to you.

Over a period of eight weeks, your dedicated Community Support volunteer will visit you once a week for approximately two hours each time. By the end of this time, many people feel much more confident about living with their illness and are ready to manage without ongoing visits, however you can access this service again in future if needed.

What can a Community Support Volunteer do for you?

The support provided by our volunteers is built around helping you live life to the full. Everyone’s needs are different, but the sort of things they can help with include:

  • Helping you find relevant information about benefits and other services
  • Accompanying you to a GP or hospital appointment
  • Taking you to the shops, hairdresser or library
  • Taking you out for a drive or walk
  • Talking about planning ahead
  • Spending time with you so that your carer, family or friends can have a break

They are not able to provide medical or personal care, such as help with bathing or showering, giving you medication or anything usually done by a healthcare professional.
