Family take on the Glitter Run in aid of St. Margaret’s Hospice The Glitter Run will see hundreds of participants completing a 5k course while getting sprayed with a fine covering of glitter. St. Margaret’s Hospice is asking supporters to run, walk, skip or even dance their way around a sparkling 5k Glitter Run at Taunton and Wincanton Racecourse. The events are kindly sponsored by West Country Windows and Gibbins Richards. The cost of these events are covered by the ticket prices, however with more than £9.5m to raise each year St. Margaret’s is hoping participants will go that extra mile and raise sponsorship. One in three people in Somerset will need our support in their lifetime, so your sponsorship will ensure your neighbour, friend or even a family member can be cared for when they need it most. Laura, her sister Sarah, mum Cathy and aunt Ali have set up a JustGiving page so their friends and colleagues can sponsor them for doing the Glitter Run at Taunton Racecourse on Saturday 16 June. They have already raised nearly £400. “We are always humbled by the sponsorship raised by people after they have experienced the care of a loved one by St. Margaret’s,” said Sonia Bateman, Events Fundraiser. “It’s especially humbling to know that people are fundraising for St. Margaret’s so their local community benefit from our care and support.” Explaining why they chose to raise donations for St. Margaret’s, Ali said: “When taking a look at the much valued and inspiring work of this hospice charity, the decision to take part in the Glitter Run was really a no-brainer. “Apart from providing care and support for families facing life-limiting illness, the charity also dedicates itself to making every day count by arranging special requests for patients, such as a ride on a Harley Davidson or simply petting a hedgehog for the first time. Therefore, in order to do my bit and help raise funds for this very worthy cause, I'm going to get off my backside, get to the gym and do my best to get round with a mix of jogging and fast walking.” Sarah said: “I am proud to take part in the Glitter Run, running alongside my wonderful family. I hope that my contribution, however small, will help the hospice continue to provide high quality palliative care and support to patients' families in their time of need. I would be very grateful for any contributions my friends and family can spare towards this wonderful charity.” Inspired by a hugely popular event which originated in California, the Glitter Run is a fun challenge which many of the 1,200 people already signed up are using as motivation to improve their fitness. Laura said: “After saying for the past few years about running a 5K, I’ve finally decided that 2018 would be that year. After hearing about this run, I thought what would be better inspiration than running alongside my family, getting covered in glitter, whilst raising money for a fab charity?” Cath added: “Running is not my strong point but it sounds great fun and I’ll give it my best shot for a great cause.” The entrance fee covers the cost of this event. With that in mind, St. Margaret's Hospice is asking all runners/walkers/skippers to raise sponsorship to ensure over 3,800 people each year across Somerset receive the care and support they need. If you would prefer to make a donation rather than raise sponsorship, you can do so through the booking page. No matter how much you raise, your money will be going to support people in your local community across Somerset. £25 sponsorship could pay for an adviceline nurse to support a patient during the middle of the night. £50 sponsorship could pay for a patient to spend a day in our Sunflower Centre, meeting people in similar circumstances, receiving symptom control advice and providing crucial respite for carers. £100 sponsorship could pay for a Specialist Community Nurse to visit a patient being cared for at home.
